Work of the ICL
Given the dynamic nature of our vision, strategy, and purpose, the Institute for Contemplative Living focuses on two
central tasks: research and application. The foundation of the ICL's work is research on contemplative
practices as the primary resource for tactical contemplation. This entails a comprehensive historical survey
of contemplative literature (Eastern Christianity, Roman philosophy, and critical theory) in order to create an expanded catalogue
of contemplative practices, as well as a review of extant contemporary contemplative practices and programs. This
research will lead both to the cataloguing of available contemplative practices and to the development of new contemplative
practices for meeting the demands of modern living.
The second task of
the ICL relates to the application and testing of tactical contemplative practices to meet the needs of individuals in day-to-day
activities, to promote creative contemplative practices in religious institutions, and to assist families and organizations
to address specific needs arising from the complexities of contemporary living. We seek to assist religious,
community, and social organizations and leaders in developing contemplative tactics to address articulated personal and communal
challenges. Recognizing the profound implications of tactical contemplation for creating an environment
for personal and social well-being and equipped with a diverse and expansive catalogue of contemplative practices, the ICL
will collaborate with public and mental health researchers who are exploring the benefits of contemplation for the public
good.
