Vision

The Institute for Contemplative Living (ICL) promulgates, develops, and teaches tactical contemplative practices emerging from the Eastern Christian tradition, ancient Roman philosophy, and modern critical theory that hold the potential for significant spiritual, psychological, and social transformation.  Tactical contemplation aims to achieve a capacity for personal and social flourishing.  The ICL researches, translates, extends, creates, and teaches contemplative practices for strategic application in real-life situations and documents their utility for meeting the spiritual, psychological, social, and organizational needs for today.

Tactical contemplation is a ready-at-hand resource of contemplative practices and patterns of conceptualizing that individuals, families, organizations, and churches may deploy as they maneuver through the complex realities of active day-to-day living.

Our Mission

The purpose of the Institute for Contemplative Living is to research, create, and teach tactical contemplation by distilling and refracting contemplative practices from various ancient and modern Western sources; translating them into modern categories and practices; creating new contemplative practices to meet the spiritual, psychological, social, and environmental challenges of today; making them relevant to both individuals and groups; and applying them in the context of active and engaged living.
